The young Viki basketball kids finish their first season with a tournament victory

Over the weekend of July 12th and 13th, 2025, the ambitious basketball club RedHawks Potsdam opened its doors and hosted a major tournament that spanned multiple venues and age groups across the city. Amongst the diverse range of participants was Viki-U10, accompanied by coach Rubaii. This team had been training together for a few years, but it was only last autumn that the children took the leap into league play to face competition for the first time. It was a debut season that wasn't always easy. Although the training group comprises both performance-oriented children born in 2016 and 2015, the decision was made to compete exclusively in the league matches for the older 2015 age group – a challenge both on and off the court.

This courageous decision meant for many: physically superior opponents and, above all, a faster and more intense game. But that is precisely where the biggest learning opportunities lay. The children grew through their tasks, developed game maturity, perseverance, and genuine team spirit. They learned to accept setbacks, take responsibility, and support one another. All these qualities were clearly evident at the RedHawks tournament in Potsdam. The boys presented themselves as a united team and showed that they are by no means beginners anymore!

After six dominant victories, the kids rewarded themselves on the second matchday. In an atmospherically charged hall, they also decided the nerve-wracking final against the strong team from Einheit Pankow in their favour and left the field as beaming tournament winners.

However, this success had already been foreshadowed a few days earlier. On Tuesday, 8th July 2025, the kids participated in the traditional streetball challenge in the Jahnsportpark, which is supported by the Berlin Senate as part of school sports. 21 competitors vied in the 2016 age group. A team under the codename „Viki Kings“ played their way through to the final undefeated and met a team there that was in cooperation with Alba Berlin and was also undefeated up to that point. However, the Vikis also prevailed in this exciting duel and crowned themselves champions.

With these experiences behind them, the kids are now looking forward to the upcoming season with great anticipation. It's about much more than just points or trophies now: the children enjoy getting together, challenge each other in training, and are making steady sporting progress thanks to their passion for the game. That's precisely why they are not just teammates, but a real team.

The dedicated coaching team plays a crucial role in this togetherness and the personal development of each individual. At the last training session before the summer break, the parents therefore thanked Head Coach Salam Rubaii and his co-coaches Manoah and Nelly with great appreciation.

Short-term update: Another tournament victory for the U10s at the BC Lions Moabit family Network Cup on 06.09.25!
